Sari Majander: Night Sweats

My friends tell me they are tired. I am, too. We bite our fingernails as we ask one another the questions that keep us up at night.

The sun rises at 8:52am tomorrow in Helsinki. That's two minutes earlier than the day before. Maybe we get to wash the bedsheets, accept the stains and start again in the morning.

Night Sweats is a body of work consisting of woodcut prints on fabric and other objects.

Lauri Tiainen: Oleskelija

The exhibition consists of oil paintings in which I want to create a momentary feeling and immediacy between the painting and the viewer.

Along with my work, I have become interested in the impression of space and depth in painting, and I am interested in,for example, what kind of space a certain color shade can create on a canvas? As a starting point for my work, I often use drawing from observation but I like to see things as if through abstract glasses where sketch drawings are a much more abstract version of reality and the end result of my work is often something between abstract and representational image.

For me the painting process has become a free area where I can experiment and observe. It is a constant dialogue between myself and the material. I look for a moment in my paintings when it seems to go beyond my own thinking and there is a feeling that I could not have planned it in advance. It’s a moment when the painting seems familiar and foreign to me at the same time and finds its own individual look.
